Celebrating Moms

A time to celebrate our most loved ladies- whether that be your mom by blood or by choice, a beloved grandma, your favorite aunt, or your adored mother figure.

I’m blessed to be surrounded by strong women in my family and chosen circles. My mom, grandmothers and aunts have all blessed me abundantly.

My mom remembers everything; from my half birthday, to my favorite chocolates, and foods. She would drop everything to be there for me, my dad, sisters, and really anyone- that’s just how it’s been in her family and that’s something that she embodies and passed down to us. I remember she had the most beautiful wardrobe when I was growing up. She worked full time until my youngest sister was born, and would wear beautiful outfits to work with perfectly coordinated jewelry. She makes the best chocolate coffee cake with peanut butter icing, sees or calls all of her grandkids daily, and loves us all fiercely.

My grandmothers also both loved fashion. I was lucky to inherit my Nana’s enormous costume jewelry collection, complete with long baubled necklaces, and of COURSE clip on earrings as large as a half dollar! I wore those to my job at Hersheypark, if you can believe it. My little Irish Mammam had a scarf for every occasion, and loved shopping for new fashions and then pick out accessories and handbags at Knock Knock while she helped me fold shirts, or brought me lunch in the early days of the shop. I miss them both tremendously, and the pieces I have from them brings memories and a smile (okay, and tears!) to my face.

Like the stamps of a passport, my life has always been decorated with jewelry. Special occasions are cemented in my mind, recalling what piece I wore, what ring I received for my 30th birthday, or the key necklace I was given on my high school graduation, unlocking the doors to my future.  On my 21st birthday, I received the lavallière pendant that my mom received on her 21st, and Mammam received on her 21st from her mom! It passed to the oldest girl down the line, and I find myself pulling that necklace on special occasions - her funeral, my son’s baptisms, holidays, etc; All of the places she should be. I recently found out that lavallière dated back to the 17th century, and were given to sweethearts like a modern day heart necklace would be-  a gift of love!

My godmother is the coolest, and she largely inspired my almost exclusively black wardrobe. She's gifted me beautiful piece over the years that are timeless! While I love my wild accessories, I also appreciate the classic, sentimental pieces connected to important times of my life, like a miraculous medal she gifted my when I was pregnant with my first glitter baby. She’s strong, loving, and also makes my grandma’s favorite sugar cookies… and then drops some off to me because she knows they’re my favorite.
